چکیده

Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to ultrahigh energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 420 nm. System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen laser beam. In atmospheric pressure dry air at 304 K the yield is 20.8 ± 1.6 photons per MeV.

Measurement of Pressure Dependent Fluorescence Yield of Air: Calibration Factor for UHECR Detectors

In a test experiment at the Final Focus Test Beam of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, the fluorescence yield of 28.5 GeV electrons in air and nitrogen was measured. The measured photon yields between 300 and 400 nm at 1 atm and 29C are Y (760 Torr) = 4.42 ± 0.73 and Y (760 Torr)2 = 29.2± 4.8 photons per electron per meter. Assuming that the fluorescence yield is proportional to the energ...

Measurement of air and nitrogen fluorescence light yields induced by electron beam for UHECR experiments

Most of the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) experiments and projects (HiRes, AUGER, TA, EUSO, TUS,...) use air fluorescence to detect and measure extensive air showers (EAS). The precise knowledge of the Fluorescence Light Yield (FLY) is of paramount importance for the reconstruction of UHECR. The MACFLY Measurement of Air Cherenkov and Fluorescence Light Yield experiment has been designed...

A Measurement of the Fluorescence Efficiency of Air F.Kakimoto,

Air fluorescence in the region 310 nm to 400 nm is due to nitrogen fluorescence. [1] We measured the nitrogen fluorescence yield in air as a function of pressure between 1.4 MeV and 1 GeV by means of a strontium â source and an electron beam. The pressure dependency of nitrogen fluorescence is well described by a formula derived from simple kinetic theory. Results indicate that nitrogen fluores...

TESLA-FEL 2004-05 The Potential for Extending the Spectral Range Accessible to the European X-ray Free Electron Laser in the Direction of Longer Wavelengths

The baseline specifications of European XFEL give a range of wavelengths between 0.1 nm and 2 nm. This wavelength range at fixed electron beam energy of 17.5 GeV can be covered by operating the SASE FEL with three undulators which have different period and tunable gap. A study of the potential for the extending the spectral range accessible to the XFEL in the direction of longer wavelengths is ...
